Materials are the bases of production. It is no exaggeration to say that materials dictate on the quality of products. More importantly, in today’s world where it is becoming more difficult to see a big difference in designs and technology, the story in the making themselves become more valuable. Moonshine mtrl only provides materials that come with a story unique to its origin in diverse and rich Japanese culture and environment. However, we can only bring you the first part of the story as the next chapter is yours to tell.
Moonshine Material has aspirations to accelerate innovation. “Moonshine” derives from bootlegging back in the Wild West- which is considered one of the secret recipes to create innovation*. We believe that by providing diverse materials and matching them with designers and producers could bring innovative products and ideas.
2. Interpreting moon as a Japanese symbol
Japan had been using the lunar calendar prior to the westernisation of lifestyles, and has always been a symbolic feature in many forms of art in its culture. When naming Moonshine Material, we wanted to add the nuance of our wish for locally created materials to shine globally.
*Bootlegging Bootlegging original comes from illegal brewery and exportation by cowboys, but it is now widely known as a way to create innovation. For instance, rules for employees to use 20-30% of their office hours on their own projects such as at 3M (the company who accidently founded post-its) is an example of bootlegging.
